A Charice story on Ten Thousand Things

Was saving this for an article in the future.  You might say, this was one of my many encounters with greatness.

Many years ago, I was asked to judge a children’s singing contest. A girl named Charice was one of the contestants. She was one of the bigger kids in the batch. Nevertheless, I was floored when she sang Whitney Houston’s ‘I wanna dance with somebody.’ In my eyes, she clearly bested all the rest by a mile. As a judge, I put her on top, of course.

When the final tallying was about to be done, someone connected with the contest came up to us (the judges) and asked if we were sure of our scores. We said we were. The guy then proceeded to say that Charice was not a ‘new talent’ anymore and had in fact come out in other contests already and  he then subtly asked if would we want to review our choices.

I said no.

She won that round because we stuck to our guns. But at the grand finals, someone else took the big prize.

Sometimes true talent can stare at us in the face and we don’t see it. It has to take foreigners to praise them before we give notice.

That’s showbiz.

Addendum:

I didn’t expect this much reaction. A few thoughts:

Some people have commented or suggested  that there was or may have been  hanky-panky based on what I wrote above. For the record, I make no accusations of any manipulation or any wrong-doing especially in the final judging. I was not there. I did not even see it on TV. That night I judged  was the only time I saw Charice  live ever. Even on the night that I judged, we were in fact free to exercise our choice and we did despite the input given to us (which I was not comfortable with).

It’s possible that she could have had an off night on the finals and thus someone else was more deserving. I don’t know.

  • well, this article seems anonymous writer, thanks for conveying this true story what went behind  close door for the lost of charice, for sure there was a manipulation fr the tv network producer or director? or whoever that person involved. he or she is bad example to contestants who was denied of the true talent coz of his wrong evil doings or actions. even charice already joined other singing contests, she can still join bigger contests as she desires, maybe that person knew that charice won in the "STARQUEST BULILIT" also on abs-cbn as this LBS  singing contest. well,i wasnt there, so i just keep on watching the YT videos on what happened why charice lose on LBS when charice beat those honors, until she got into the finals, and shes the only one there who has the great voice? up to this point i'm really haven't accepted that fact that she lost, all in wonderment, even tho her career is better than those winner and 2nd runner up. coz when there's cheating involved its hard to accept the defeat,vs the truth. maybe that person/s went ahead and kept on text voting for sam concepcion for charice to lose-the only way he could beat the judges who refused to obey the wished or manipulation of changing their scores of voting for charice. and 1 text vote will make charice lose, and that was how that things went on behind that closed door. coz i saw and can still see as of now writing this  the face of charice when she was called 3rd runner up,that face i could forget,i wanted to cry and felt that pain deep w/n her, and when she told her momR that she might have lost due to text voting, that was shared to them already before the announcement who lose and won! maybe to prepare charice that she didnt win. but the tv viewers watching that time, can't believe that she really lost, coz i know up to now, people still believe charice has the  winning voice, the true voice indeed, and anybody who will try to access those contestants will find out that charice deserved to be the champion. its hard for me to move on to accept her loss, knowing the fact that she got that voice , coz i knew something in that LBS weird thing was going on, inside job, manipulations of the tv network's LBS production. that's why we were all in wonderment why she loss this contest! i remember 1 american interviewer of charice said, "u were robbed!" (when cha told the interviewer that she joined the LBS  singing contest and lost).  sure it was daylight robbery, she was robbed of that  one million pesos grand prize, she was robbed of that title that she was dreaming of to win for her singing career, she was robbed of that prestige title champion of the tv show LBS. some chasters might have already move on coz of her getting to stardom, but this is just my take on this article, coz my heart still stubbed on her loss, tho cha is doing so well now. GOD BLESS to  charice and momR and bro.carl!

  • Regardless of the "reason" for the outcome on LBS, the outcome for Charice's career was the big winner!
